  • What is RESTASIS®?
    • RESTASIS® ophthalmic emulsion is the first breakthrough therapy that increases tear production by reducing ocularRESTASIS® inflammation.
    • cyclosporineRESTASIS® Logo ophthalmic emulsionis indicated to increase tear production in patients whose tear production is presumed to be suppressed due to occular inflammation associated with keratoconjunctivitis sicca.
    • Increased tear production was not seen in patients currently taking topical anti-inflammatory drugs or using punctal plugs
  • How does it work?
    • While the exact mechanism of action is unknown, RESTASIS® ophthalmic emulsion is presumed to treat inflammation, which is an underlying cause of Dry Eye Disease.
    • It has been shown to improve tear production which leads to significant improvement in ocular surface integrity which, in turn, resolves dry eye symptoms and returns the surface of the eye to a more normal state while providing relief of the symptoms associated with Dry Eye Disease.

  • What are the side effects?
    • The most common side effect reported by 17% of patients was ocular burning.
    • Other side effects reported by 1% to 5% of patients included conjunctival hyperemia, discharge, epiphora, eye pain, foreign-body sensation, pruritus, stinging, and visual disturbance (most often blurring).
    • RESTASIS® is contraindicated in patients with active ocular infections and has not been studied in patients with a history of herpes keratitis.
